The Blacksmith, Guinness mixed with barley wine, was actually on my list to try until I discovered I had no more barley wine ales at my house. I can't imagine this having any redeeming qualities. I don't need any quinine in my beer, thank you.Īnother not-so-appetizing sounding drink is the Top Hat, which is a mixture of Guinness and ginger beer. There are numerous mixed drinks that can be made with Guinness. Although black and tans - a mixture of a stout and usually a lighter ale - have been around for years, most people immediately think of Guinness and Bass Ale. Guinness has done a great job of marketing over the years. (Just a note: When drinking Guinness, you're not getting it from Ireland, you're getting it from Canada.) A dry stout, there's a little hop kick at the end. It's very creamy and full of sweetness from the malt used in the brewing. It's dark when poured and it has a great head of foam. Guinness Extra Stout, available in 12-ounce bottles, is my favorite, more so than the cans or even on tap. Patrick's Day coming up on Saturday, it's the perfect time to take another look at the world-famous Irish stout.
